Surprisingly, no. The metal is reflective, not heat-absorbing, and in peak summer conditions these beds are often cooler than the surrounding air temperature.
How long do these beds last?
With cedar posts sunk below soil grade, you can expect around 10 years of use. If you choose treated wood or coat cedar with a below-grade sealant, they can last significantly longer. Here is a photo from our 9th growing season using these beds:
Do the metal beds leach anything into the soil?
We’ve had annual soil tests done every year we’ve grown in these beds, and there have been no abnormal results. The metal panels are galvanized with a zinc solution which is a vital soil nutrient. We have grow food in them confidently and safely for years.
Do I need to be an expert builder to make these?
Not at all. These plans are designed to be approachable for beginner DIYers, with step-by-step instructions, clear photos, and detailed lists so you’re never guessing.
How much do materials cost per bed?
When we built our beds in 2017, materials cost about $150 per bed for lumber and supplies. Prices vary by location and year, so your total may be higher or lower depending on current lumber costs.
